Nicola Sturgeon: SNP can oppose Theresa May plan without triggering no deal Brexit

Nicola Sturgeon has insisted the SNP opposing Theresa May’s Brexit plan in the Commons will not mean the UK crashing out of the EU with no deal.

The First Minister said she could not support the Prime Minister’s compromise proposal “as it stands” and it was “highly questionable” whether a majority of MPs would back it.

Instead she argued Mrs May should press for the UK staying in the customs union and single market, a move that would appear unpalatable to most Tory MPs as it would mean retaining freedom of movement.

But senior Conservative sources said the SNP would be faced with a choice between Mrs May’s plan and crashing out of Europe with no deal, if the former wins the EU’s support.
